Txiki could replicate 2022 transfer masterclass by landing Man City deal for ‘ambitious’ target - opinion

Txiki Begiristain has the chance to replicate one of his previous transfer masterclasses at Manchester City this summer.

Having been the club’s sporting director since 2012, the 59-year-old has overlooked many transfer deals at the Etihad Stadium.

With the Blues now being the only side to win four Premier League titles in a row, another summer transfer window lies ahead for them and the rest of Europe.

Looking ahead to this upcoming transfer period, we feel that City and Begiristain have the opportunity to strike a similar deal to one they made in 2022 which has proved to be a very smart one.

Txiki Begiristain could pull off another bargain deal for City this summer

Earlier this week, it was reported in Germany that the Citizens have got their eyes on a potential move for Werder Bremen goalkeeper Michael Zetterer.

If City were to sign the Bremen shot-stopper, this could mirror their 2022 move for Stefan Ortega, who was also playing in Germany before making his move to the Etihad.

Since joining the Blues, the 31-year-old has proven himself to be a very capable goalkeeper.

For example, across the nine Premier League games he featured in this season, Ortega saved 20 of the 27 shots on target he faced, leaving him with a save percentage of 74.1%, which is higher than Ederson’s save percentage of 70.7%.

Zetterer is just like Ortega

In comparison, Zetterer, who has previously described himself as an “ambitious” player, has appeared in 27 Bundesliga games this season and saved 92 of the 128 shots he faces.

This left him with a save percentage of 74.2%, the fourth-highest in the entire division, even higher than Manuel Neuer (66.7%).

Given how similar he is to Ortega in terms of his shot-stopping ability and the fact that he’s a German player currently playing in his home country, as the City goalkeeper was before he joined in 2022, this shows why a move for Zetterer this summer could be just as successful as their move for Ortega has been.
