'My understanding': Romano shares what he's hearing about 'top young talent' after reports Liverpool want him

The transfer window isn’t even open yet and the rumours are already flying for Liverpool.

It looks set to be a busy summer at Liverpool, with Arne Slot kicking off his time at the club.

In previous years, the Reds have often sat back a little in the transfer market. Safe in the knowledge that Jurgen Klopp was continuing at the helm, Liverpool have been an incredibly settled club.

Now though, with Klopp gone, plenty of question marks have arisen over the Liverpool squad and indeed the coaching staff. There’s a lot to get done.

Amid all of that, the Reds are seemingly continuing to scour the globe for the best young talent. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has provided the latest on Liverpool’s search for football’s next big thing.

Liverpool linked with Brazilian talent Wesley Gassova

There seems to be something of a culture change going on with Liverpool in terms of transfer targets.

It has been claimed that head scout Barry Hunter has recently been in South America – and more specifically Brazil – to take a look at any up and coming gems.

The Reds have never been particularly adept at picking up players from the continent while they can still get them for a reasonable price.

But while Hunter may have been taking a second look at Fluminense’s Andre Trindade, there are plenty of others who could have caught his eye besides.

One who can hardly have gone unnoticed is Corinthians forward Wesley Gassova. Wesley has been in good form this season, scoring three times in his last eight games.

This has led to reports that Liverpool have been impressed. And writing in his Daily Briefing, journalist Romano has offered an update on the 19-year-old.

“Wesley Gassova is a top young talent attracting plenty of interest at the moment, with reports about clubs like West Ham and Liverpool tracking the 19-year-old forward from Corinthians,” he says.

“My understanding is that West Ham have been scouting him for sure, but there are like five or six clubs interested. It’s still early, so in the next weeks it will become clear.”

Liverpool should beat West Ham to Wesley

We’re not altogether sure why Liverpool don’t push harder to sign talents like Wesley.

Aside from the Corinthians prospect, they’ve also been linked with the likes of Lorran from Flamengo and Luis Guilherme of Palmeiras.

However, we’re still yet to see Liverpool truly set their stall out and push hard to bring one in.

You can understand why the Reds may be a little hesitant. It is a bit of a gamble to sign such a young player like Wesley straight from Brazil. If he goes to West Ham and does well, that’s when you’d be more likely to see Liverpool step in.

By that stage the Hammers would be within their rights to demand an exorbitant fee, though.

Liverpool can head that off at the source and take a chance on Wesley fulfilling the potential he obviously has. They’re in the market for an attacker, so what’s the worst that could happen?
