The Japanese government plans to provide Ukrainian rescue teams with mechanized demining machines to clear areas of explosive remnants, citing the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES).

Ukrainian rescuers met with Japanese representatives at one of the SES main department units in the Cherkasy region.

During the meeting, they inspected the equipment previously provided by the Japanese partners and learned about the operations of the pyrotechnic and humanitarian demining units.

"In turn, the Japanese government confirmed its intention to provide Ukrainian rescue teams with mechanized demining machines to clear areas of explosive remnants of war," the SES reported.

The acting head of the SES of Ukraine expressed gratitude to the Japanese partners for significantly strengthening the SES's demining capabilities.

Demining in Ukraine

Amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine and ongoing active hostilities, over a quarter of Ukraine's territory is currently contaminated with mines and explosive devices.

Last spring, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced that Ukraine was launching a new state policy on humanitarian demining. As part of this initiative, the Ukrainian government called on other countries to assist in this area.

As previously reported, Ukraine has established a Demining Corps consisting of 5,000 specialists who will undertake tasks in de-occupied territories.

Additionally, the Ukrainian government plans to involve more women in demining efforts.

Recently, it was announced that Ukraine and Croatia signed a memorandum to assist in demining Ukrainian territories.
