Man City experts split on most important win of 2023/24 season but all involved Phil Foden

Manchester City enjoyed several massive wins in a season that saw them claim another three trophies.

Though Manchester City were prevented from clinching a double double by Manchester United in the FA Cup final, it was still another successful season.

Pep Guardiola’s side claimed the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup for the first time before becoming the only team in English history to win four successive league titles.

City won the title by a single point and Manchester City News’ writers have now given their pick for the most important win in the race with Phil Foden playing in every one.

James Thompson – Tottenham 0-2 Manchester City

Given City’s dismal record at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, not many supporters would have been confident heading into this vital match in the title race.

Despite a shaky first-half display and some heart-in-mouth moments in the second period, Erling Haaland’s brace landed City their most important result of the campaign.

Srinivas Sadhanand – Tottenham 0-2 Manchester

In a must-win game against Tottenham at their bogey ground, there were several moments where City’s title hopes were hanging by a thread.

But Erling Haaland and Stefan Ortega’s brilliance embodied City’s relentlessness for glory as a club.

Aside from the fact that a majority of the Sky Blues’ players being superstars, they are a battle-hardened group who stare adversity in the face and make history anyway.

Guardiola’s City side are associated with the perceived lack of jeopardy that seemingly comes with their triumphs.

But it was in this contest where they were leggy, sloppy and flawed as a whole that this team summed up why it is in a class of its own in England.

Tom Proctor – Newcastle United 2-3 Manchester City

An absolutely huge win at the time and looking back now, it was so important City got three points here.

Newcastle are a difficult opponent and City showed fantastic character to come from behind in that game to win late on.

It was a sensational goal from Oscar Bobb at the end and a win that made Gary Neville feel ‘ominous’ about City in the title race.

Dan Murphy – Luton 1-2 Manchester City

A narrow victory over Luton hardly looks important in the grand scheme of things but it was actually the genesis of yet another relentless undefeated streak for Manchester City.

Four days before the match in December, the Blues had just suffered their third defeat of the season to Aston Villa, leaving them three points behind the Villains in fourth and seven behind leaders Liverpool.

An hour in at Kenilworth Road Pep Guardiola’s side were a goal behind and staring down the barrel of a catastrophic defeat that likely would have cost them the title.

But goals from Bernardo Silva and Jack Grealish within three minutes turned the game around and City haven’t lost in the league since.
