Gary Neville has just admitted that he was wrong about Everton player who he has criticised many times before

Everton, despite all their failings across the last few years, have still had plenty of top players pass through their doors.

Stars like Romelu Lukaku, John Stones and Richarlison, to name just three, have all shone for the Toffees and gone on to amass huge sums as they transferred up the Premier League table.

They had earned moves away from Goodison Park, and the club was happy to gain a hefty financial incentive to sanction their departures.

However, that does not make the sales amicable though, with the club digging its heels in to try and keep the first two, and only allowing the latter to leave due to PSR constraints.

So, that makes it all the more sweet when one of the players of this calibre snubs a transfer and instead sticks around. Seamus Coleman is one outstanding example, who rejected interest from other clubs back in 2014, and now they boast another.

Gary Neville admits he was wrong about Jordan Pickford

Gary Neville has very often been critical of Everton and the running of the club, alongside his Sky Sports co-host Jamie Carragher.

The two have sought to shed light on Farhad Moshiri’s failures that have led to such high-profile sales, but also delivered scathing verdicts on the playing staff that have condemned them to regular relegation dogfights.

And yet, despite Jordan Pickford remaining their most stable and successful asset, the former Manchester United full-back has continued to lambast him.

That was, until recently, as he spoke glowingly about the 30-year-old on The Overlap.

He noted: ‘I think I got him wrong because when I first saw him for England I was worried about him, and for Everton. But for the last three or four years…’.

This comes just a year after Neville criticised him just last year in the Merseyside derby, and many years after he suggested he predominantly performed well for England.

Jordan Pickford has been consistently great for Everton and England

It is arguably the laziest Everton statement that a football fan can make, to claim that Pickford only performs for his country.

Yes, he does star for England, but whatever he does on the international stage he has done ten times over for the Toffees.

In fact, the former Sunderland man has been one of Sean Dyche and Frank Lampard’s most important players, performing when it really mattered in a position of intense scrutiny.

Pickford even made Everton history this year with one thing he did for the club in the Premier League.

Just one mistake from a goalkeeper puts them in the spotlight instantly, but steady performances never dominate headlines. Well, with Pickford, perhaps it’s about time they do.
