‘What he does’: Wayne Rooney says ‘professional’ player is actually very useful for Man City

Wayne Rooney has highlighted how useful one particular player is for Manchester City on the pitch.

The Manchester club continued their Premier League dominance this season by becoming the first side to win four titles in a row.

With the European Championships on the horizon now that club football has come to an end for another season, several City players are expected to be involved in the tournament.

Now though, one former Premier League and England star has shared his verdict on one particular City player, who could be in action during the Euros in Germany.

Speaking in a recent edition of The Overlap, Rooney had this to say about Jack Grealish and what he offers the City team.

He said: “What he does do is draw players towards him and create a bit of space for other players.

“He holds on to the ball and players have a little bite at him and then all of a sudden these pockets open up, so when teams sit back against City, there is not a lot of space there for them.”

Back in the 2021 summer transfer window, City shelled out a club-record fee of £100m to sign the winger from Aston Villa.

Since then, the 28-year-old has made 125 appearances for City in all competitions, scoring 14 goals and providing 18 assists in the process.

Grealish is still an important player for City

Even though Grealish only started 10 of the 20 Premier League games he appeared in this season, he still managed to end the campaign with the third-highest total of carries into the penalty area (50) and the joint-fourth-highest rate of shot-creating actions per 90 minutes (4.82) in the City squad.

With that in mind, as well as Rooney’s comments and the fact that Pep Guardiola highlighted last year how “professional” Grealish is, it’s clear that even though he wasn’t particularly prominent in the team this season, he’s still an important figure in City’s team.
