‘Very special’ manager rejected the chance to become Chelsea boss before Enzo Maresca – journalist

Journalist Alan Nixon has now stated that one manager was actually handed the chance to take over at Chelsea before the job went elsewhere.

The Blues have acted quickly in their quest to bring in a new boss after they decided to part ways with Mauricio Pochettino at the end of the campaign.

The decision was almost certainly not made based on performances and results on the pitch, with them salvaging a sixth placed finish from what was a rough start to the campaign.

It could well be today that Enzo Maresca is announced as the new Chelsea boss, despite the fact he has never managed a game in the Premier League.

His work under Pep Guardiola as part of the Manchester City side put him in good stead for the future, and he proved his qualities in his one season at Leicester City where they returned to the Premier League.

Vincent Kompany rejected Chelsea job

However, it has emerged that he was perhaps not exactly the first choice for the role. Nixon has stated on his Patreon that new Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany was actually a candidate for the role before he made the move to Germany.

The Belgian, described as ‘very special’ following the work he did in charge at Burnley has been talked about when it comes to the Chelsea job before, however at the time they elected to go for Pochettino following an extensive recruitment process.

Reservations around Enzo Maresca

After relegation with Burnley, the former City defender was given the opportunity to take over at Champions League semi-finalists Bayern Munich.

While many around the club have one or two reservations over the Italian who is taking over the club for next season, there will have been even more so if they had hired someone who had just been relegated from the Premier League.
