Report: Champions League side made last-minute move to hire Enzo Maresca, he chose Chelsea instead

Reports have claimed that another side made a late move to bring in Enzo Maresca as their next manager.

It is widely expected that Maresca is about to be named the next Chelsea boss, just a week or so after they made the decision to part ways with Mauricio Pochettino.

Their search for a new boss saw a number of candidates come up as potential figures to take over, with Roberto De Zerbi and Kieran McKenna at the top of that list.

However, it seems they were impressed by the Leicester City man, with him reportedly boasting an encyclopedic knowledge of both the first team squad and the youngsters at Chelsea.

The Italian also reportedly has a plan in placeto get the best out of Enzo Fernandez, who many believe we have yet to see the best from at Stamford Bridge.

With a number of top clubs entering the managerial merry-go round this summer, the Blues acted quickly in their quest to bring someone in before the rush began.

Porto wanted Maresca as their manager

A number of sides who competed in the latest rendition of the Champions League are looking for a new manager, and one of those is Porto, who finished third in Portugal this season.

According to Di Marzio, they actually had contact with Maresca over potentially taking the job there, however he decided to make the move to West London instead.

Many are keen to see if the Italian’s lack of experience at the top level will have an impact on the impression he will leave after taking over at a top team.

However, it should be noted that Arsenal took a very similar risk when hiring Mikel Arteta, and it is unimaginable where they would be right now without him at the helm.
