Report: Wolves now want ‘fantastic’ left back to rival Ait-Nouri, once compared to Ashley Cole

Wolves are now reportedly interested in capturing a left-back to rival Rayan Ait-Nouri who was once compared to Chelsea legend Ashley Cole.

In his first season in charge of Wolves, Gary O’Neil led the Old Gold to a respectable 14th-place finish in the Premier League.

Despite flirting with the idea of Europe early on, the Wanderers dropped down the table like a stone from March onwards as O’Neil had to contend with a depleted squad that was ravaged by injuries.

It has only heightened the need to strengthen multiple areas of their squad this summer to carry on progressing as a club.

One area that the 41-year-old has been frustrated about is the lack of strikers at his disposal, with reports linking Wolves to Arsenal forward Eddie Nketiah.

A striker isn’t the only striker on the list of priorities for O’Neil, though, as he seeks to add competition for wing-back Rayan Ait-Nouri.

Ryan Sessegnon now of interest to Wolves

According to GIVEMESPORT, Wolves, Crystal Palace and newly-promoted Ipswich Town have shown a ‘level of interest’ in Tottenham wing-back Ryan Sessegnon.

Many will remember Sessegnon bursting onto the scene as an electric left-winger at Fulham and in October 2018, he became the first player born in the 2000s to score a Premier League goal.

At this point, the world was the Englishman’s oyster but fast forward nearly six years and his stock has dropped dramatically.

Since Tottenham captured the winger for £25 million in the summer of 2019, the 24-year-old has made just 57 appearances for the club and the most league matches he’s managed in a league campaign was 17 in 2022/23, often coming off the bench.

Injury troubles have haunted Sessegnon in North London, last starting for the club in January 2023.

And with his contract expiring this summer, it appears he could leave for nothing and Wolves could take a punt on the player to rival Ait-Nouri.

Ryan Sessegnon could get his career back on track at Wolves

Although the Algerian has cemented his place as a left wing-back under O’Neil, Sessegnon could get his career back on track at Molineux.

During his time in Wolverhampton, it’s become apparent that O’Neil’s man-management skills are impeccable. He’s got the best out of so many talents who previously lost their way, including Nelson Semedo, Hwang Hee-Chan and Matheus Cunha.

In signing Sessegnon on a free transfer, the Englishman could pull off similar miracles and perhaps drag him towards his potential.

Jose Mourinho was a big fan of the former Fulham man during his spell as manager of Tottenham, labelling the attacking wing-back as “fantastic” and comparing him to none other than Ashley Cole.

Speaking in 2019, the Portuguese icon said: “I think Ryan can play as a left-back. Probably the left-back in the last decade was Ashley Cole, in spite of him being from two enemy clubs, but he was fantastic.

“But Ryan has lots of similarities with Ashley, and he can learn how to defend.

“In the future I think he can be (a left-back) but in this moment he is not ready to play as a left-back.”

Mourinho was the one who spotted his capabilities to play as a left-back, utilising his electric pace and incredible power to move up and down the flank.

With O’Neil playing a wing-back system at Molineux, Sessegnon could revive his career and become an option to challenge Ait-Nouri.
