Report: Newcastle are now interested in signing 'fantastic pressing player' who got more assists than Almiron

After the season that Miguel Almiron had, it is clear that Newcastle United need a new right winger.

While Miguel Almiron was somewhat prolific during the 2022/23 campaign, the season just gone was much more challenging.

The Paraguayan struggled to score, while he provided even fewer assists. From 45 Newcastle United appearances this season, Almiron scored five goals and got three assists.

That is why the Magpies are looking to sign an improvement in his position, with the majority of Eddie Howe’s transfer budget set to go on a right winger.

The likes of Jarrod Bowen and Michael Olise have been linked, both of which would be outstanding signings for Newcastle. However, they both would command huge fees and could be out of the Magpies’ price range.

According to French outlet L’Equipe, Newcastle United are one of two Premier League clubs that are interested in signing Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford.

The other club mentioned is Liverpool, as Arne Slot looks to put his stamp on the squad that he is inheriting from Jurgen Klopp.

The 24-year-old has even hinted at a move away from the Bees, speaking to L’Equipe about his future.

“I spent five seasons at Brentford, at a club that helped me grow and turn a corner,” he said.

“But yes, I want to play in the biggest competitions, for the best clubs. It’s still exciting to see some of the big teams interested in me. We’ll see.”

Newcastle are unable to offer Mbeumo bigger competitions next season

Mbeumo wants to play in the biggest competitions, and he would have had that chance if he was a Newcastle player this season. Howe’s side took part in the Champions League, but did not make it past the group stage. However, that should be caveated by the fact that Newcastle were in the group of death, and one of their opponents could win the entire competition on Saturday.

However, moving to Tyneside now would not immediately give Mbeumo the chance to play in bigger competitions. Newcastle have missed out on Europe completely, meaning it will just be domestic duties for them during the 2024/25 campaign.

In contrast, Liverpool will be back in the Champions League.

That could sway things in the Reds’ favour, but there is no denying that Mbeumo would be a good fit at Newcastle.

Mbeumo would be a great replacement for Miguel Almiron at Newcastle

In 25 Premier League games this season, the Cameroon international scored nine goals and provided six assists. Those are impressive numbers, and they would be even greater had he not missed 13 games due to an ankle injury.

Statistically, Mbeumo would be a huge improvement on Almiron. And he could also provide the same tactical appeal.

While he often struggles in the final third, Almiron fulfils the role that Howe wants. He is great at pressing high and winning back possession, which is an important part of Howe’s system at Newcastle.

Mbeumo has the capacity to do that too, with Thomas Frank admitting to the Athletic last year that he is a ‘fantastic pressing player‘.

That could make Mbeumo even more appealing to the Magpies, and he is certainly a potential signing that would really excite the Toon Army.
