Report: Everton think £43m midfielder could replace Amadou Onana if he leaves this summer

Everton have been eyeing a replacement for Amadou Onana should the Belgian midfielder leave Goodison Park this summer.

The 22-year-old hasbeen continuously linked with moves away from Goodison Park ever since he arrived at the club back in 2022.

And after a below-par 2023/24 season,Onana has been tipped as a player who could depart in order to raise funds during the summer window.

Sky Sports reported on Tuesday that Kalvin Phillips has emerged as a target for the Toffees, with Manchester City looking to move the former Leeds United star out of the Etihad.

Now, according to The Daily Mail, the 28-year-old is viewed as a replacement for Onana should the Belgian depart.

It’s understood Everton won’t consider selling Onana for less than the £58million Chelsea paid for Romeo Lavia last summer.

However, if a big bid were to arrive, Phillips could head to Goodison Park as a result.

One potential roadblock centres around City’s eagerness for a permanent deal, with Everton looking for a temporary agreement.

A lot of pieces need to fall in place for this deal to happen

At the moment, Phillips’s move to Goodison Park feels unlikely. His wages, coupled with Manchester City’s desire for a permanent deal, feel unrealistic for Everton.

Furthermore, with Onana still on the Toffees’ books, a lot of pieces need to fall into place.

Right now, unless a big bid arrives, keeping hold of the Belgian feels like the smart move.

He’s still young and has plenty to learn after breaking into the first XI last season.

Irrespective of his poor form this season, most Evertonians would be eager for the club to persist with Onana instead of signing Phillips, who has, let’s face it, severely underperformed in recent years.
