On May 31st, 2024, Jose Ibarra appeared in a Clarke County courtroom to enter his plea. To the surprise of many, he pleaded not guilty to the charges against him, setting the stage for a highly anticipated trial.

The coroner's report revealed that she had suffered blunt force trauma to the head, ultimately leading to her untimely death. Her body was discovered by the police in a secluded area near the university's intramural fields, a heartbreaking end to a promising young life.
In the aftermath of Riley's murder, the authorities quickly turned their attention to Jose Ibarra, a 26-year-old Venezuelan national living illegally in the United States. Ibarra was apprehended and charged with a litany of felonies, including malice murder, three counts of felony murder, kidnapping, aggravated assault, aggravated battery, tampering with evidence, and interfering with a 911 call for help.

The investigation revealed that Ibarra had entered the country illegally in September 2022, crossing the southern border near El Paso, Texas. He was subsequently released on parole by federal immigration authorities, who cited a lack of detention space as the reason for his release.
As the case against Jose Ibarra progresses, more details have emerged about his criminal history and his ties to illegal immigration. In addition to the charges related to Riley's murder, Ibarra was also handed a "peeping Tom" charge for his activities around the UGA campus on the day of the crime.
Furthermore, during the search for Riley's killer, Ibarra's brother, 29-year-old Diego Ibarra, was also arrested. It was discovered that Diego Ibarra was in possession of a fraudulent green card, further highlighting the broader issues surrounding illegal immigration and the challenges faced by law enforcement.
