Wayne Rooney claims 'incredible' former Man Utd target is his country's best-ever player ahead of two club legends

Plymouth Argyle manager Wayne Rooney has insisted that one “incredible” former Manchester United target is his country’s best-ever player ahead of two Red Devils legends.

The 38-year-old Manchester United and England legend had a prolific playing career for club and country and is widely regarded as one of the best strikers of all time.

Wayne Rooney was capped 120 times for his country and scored 53 times, even surpassing United legend Sir Bobby Charlton as England’s all-time leading scorer.

The former England striker, who also captained the Three Lions, enjoyed a legendary playing spell at Old Trafford during the peak of his powers.

Rooney arrived at United in 2004 from Everton and lifted five Premier League titles, a Champions League, a Europa League, an FA Cup and three League Cups.

During his prolific spell at Old Trafford, the former Three Lions international surpassed Sir Bobby Charlton as United’s all-time leading scorer.

Rooney ascended to the club captaincy under former United boss Louis van Gaal, with the ex-Everton star capturing his only FA Cup trophy under the Dutchman.

The former United striker returned to Everton in 2017 for a brief second spell before seeing out the rest of his career at DC United and Derby County.

Rooney praises former England teammate

Speaking on The Overlap, Wayne Rooney opened up about his legendary playing career and his life away from the pitch to former teammate Gary Neville.

The Plymouth Argyle boss dropped huge praise on former England teammate Harry Kane, who was heavily linked with Manchester United in the past.

Harry Kane broke his former teammate’s all-time goalscoring record for England, with Rooney previously holding the feat after eclipsing Sir Bobby Charlton.

The former Tottenham striker followed in Rooney’s footsteps and later became England captain, with Kane inheriting the armband from Jordan Henderson.

Kane enjoyed a successful season at Bayern Munich, despite the German club falling well short of the Bundesliga title to champions Bayer Leverkusen.

The 30-year-old England captain scored 44 times in 45 appearances in his debut season in Germany, with Kane finding the back of the net 36 times in the league.

Rooney believes that Kane, who signed for Bayern last summer, is England’s best-ever player ahead of himself and fellow United legend Charlton.

“I think Harry Kane is an incredible player,” he said.

“The goals he’s scored, the assists and as of the last few years, I would say he’s England’s greatest-ever player.

“He’s always professional and he never misses a game, which is a common theme with players like Jude Bellingham, Kane and Phil Foden.”

Kane to play big part for England at Euro 2024

England boss Gareth Southgate will be relying on Kane’s impressive form for this summer’s Euro 2024 tournament in Germany.

Gareth Southgate is out of contract with England in December and the Three Lions manager has been linked with United in recent months.

Euro 2024 is expected to be Southgate’s last competition and the England head coach has fallen short of delivering major silverware at the previous three tournaments.

Kane, meanwhile, still hasn’t lifted any piece of major silverware in his entire career, despite being considered one of the best strikers in the world.

England are in Group C for the tournament in Germany and will face Slovenia, Denmark and Serbia with the hopes of reaching the knockout stages.
