Two shot, three charged in Jersey City weekend melee

Two people, including a 16-year-old, were shot and three people, including another 16-year-old, were arrested over the weekend in two related incidents in Jersey City that ended with a police cruiser striking a vehicle during a pursuit.

Jersey City police responded to a report of shots fired in the area of Martin Luther King Drive between Bayview and Wilkinson avenues late Saturday night and found that a large street fight led to shots being fired, city spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione said

During the investigation, police found that a 16-year-old who had been shot in the incident arrived at a local hospital with a graze wound to his upper thigh, Wallace-Scalcione said. Another 16-year-old, of Jersey City, was arrested and charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and weapons offenses.

A short time after the initial incident, the crowd that had dispersed took their fight to Fremont Street, near the Booker T. Washington public housing complex.

Responding Jersey City police officers observed shots being fired between the two groups, Wallace-Scalcione said. One man, identified as in his 30s, suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the legs and was listed as stable and in good condition shortly thereafter.

A Chevy Malibu suspected of being involved in the shooting incident was identified, and when police attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver sped away. The driver, later identified as Corshon Cousins, sped through a stop sign at the intersection of Clinton and Bergen avenues and struck a Honda Civic traveling south on Bergen Avenue.

Due to an oil slick created during the collision, a police vehicle was unable to stop as well as anticipated and struck the rear passenger fender of the suspect vehicle, causing minor damage.

The driver and passenger in the fleeing vehicle and a passenger involved in the crash and a bystander in another vehicle were transported to the JCMC for treatment, all with non-life threatening injuries. The two actors have since been released from the hospital and remain in police custody.

Corshon Cousins, 21, and Kayvon Brown, 32, both of Jersey City, was arrested and charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and multiple weapons offenses. Cousins was separately charged with eluding and Brown was charged with certain persons not to have weapons.

In an unrelated incident early Sunday morning, a 39-year-old man told police that he was approached and stabbed by a woman he doesn’t know, Wallace-Scalcione said. The woman then fled on foot, while the victim was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation. The investigation is ongoing.

Two dozen alleged members of street gang that associates itself with the Booker T. Washington housing complexwere arrested on federal charges Thursday. An investigation into the gang’s activities found members were selling large quantities of narcotics including heroin, fentanyl and cocaine, authorities said.
