2 charged with shooting outside N.J. home that wounded 11-year-old inside

An 11-year-old lying on the floor of his Atlantic City home was shot by a bullet from a dispute outside, according to police.

The bullet fired during the dispute at 10:26 p.m. Saturday went into the home in the 100 block of north Rhode Island Avenue, according to a news statement from Atlantic City police.

The boy’s injury is not life threatening, police said. The boy was taken to AltlaniCare Regional Medical Center for treatment, police said.

Police have charged 22-year-old Yanirah Davis of Galloway Township and 33-year-old Yontay Cooper of Egg Harbor Township each with aggravated assault for their roles in the shooting and dispute on the street. Neither woman has a listed phone number and neither could be reached for comment.

Police said the women came to the street with a hammer and a handgun to confront a group with whom they had a prior dispute. They smashed a vehicle’s window then began to shoot at the group, police said. One of the bullets entered the child’s home and struck him, police said.

Davis was picked up by Pleasantville police at about 2:30 p.m. Sunday after she was allegedly involved in a dispute among several females inside a Wawa convenience store. Pleasantville police charged a 32-year-old Pleasantville woman with deploying mace inside of the store, causing the evacuation and forcing the temporarily closure of the store.

Police took Cooper into custody Sunday morning.

Davis and Cooper were turned over to the Atlantic City Police Department and sent to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.

Each woman is charged with 10 counts of aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, endangering the welfare of a child and conspiracy in connection with the Atlantic City incident.

The Atlantic City Police Department is investigating the shooting with the Egg Harbor Township, Pleasantville, and Galloway Township police departments.
