Hit-and-run leaves 76-year-old Kearny man in critical condition

A 76-year-old Kearny man is in critical condition at a Newark hospital after he was struck in a hit-and-run crash Thursday morning, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said.

The crash, which occurred shortly after 7 a.m. at the intersection of Kearny and Columbia avenues, is being investigated by the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit and the Kearny Police Department.

Responding officers located the victim with serious injuries, but the striking vehicle had fled the scene. The victim was taken to University Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

During the preliminary investigation, the vehicle suspected of being involved in the collision was recovered, said Suarez, who did not provide any information on whether the vehicle had been reported stolen.
