A Supreme Court justice’s security detail was used to intimidate neighbors whose political beliefs countered that of his wife’s, one such neighbor told the Guardian Friday.
At the center of the dispute stood the attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 — an event that Supreme Court justice must now consider as he weighs former President Donald Trump’s defense in his federal election interference case.
The justice, of course, is Sam Alito, who has refused to recuse himself from ruling on Trump’s presidential immunity argument.

The neighbor is Emily Baden, who told the Guardian a large black car began parking in front of her mother’s house after she displayed political signs on their lawn.
“I took that as directly threatening,” Baden told the Guardian.

The Guardian reports the security detail returned again about two weeks ago when the New York Times broke their story about an upside-down flag seen hanging in the Alito’s yard before the inauguration of President Joe Biden.
The upside-down flag is considered a pro-Trump "Stop the Steal" symbol.
Two months earlier, the Supreme Court had requested nearly $20 million in federal funds to bolster security in their private homes.
Baden says tinted glass blocked her from identifying the people in the car but, although its occupants have remained silent, she said their message is clear.

“When it comes to justices at the Supreme Court, they make the laws, but the laws don’t apply to them,” Baden told the Guardian. “The message was, we could do terrible things to you, and nobody would be able to do anything about it.”
