'It's top': £45m attacker now raves about playing at Anfield after claims Liverpool would love to sign him

Upon his last game as manager of Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp was keen to point out that the club has a ‘superpower.’

But it was not the financial might of the institution, or the strength of its playing squad that Klopp was talking about.

Instead, the former Liverpool manager was speaking about the power of the Anfield crowd.

Klopp had an unbelievable record at Liverpool’s home stadium. Throughout almost nine years, the Reds became virtually unbeatable on their own ground.

A big reason for that was the support drummed up from the stands. It’s obvious that Liverpool’s trophy history would be nowhere near as impressive as it is without the famous Anfield crowd.

Anthony Gordon raves about Anfield atmosphere

But it isn’t just those on the home team who are often bowled over by the noise and passion at Anfield. The famous old stadium has garnered a reputation as being one of the most special in the footballing world.

Only last week, Emmanuel Adebayor added his name to the lengthy list of players who rank Liverpool’s stadium as the best int he country. And now, that fan base has grown by a handful more.

They may have often been beaten when travelling to play at Anfield, but it’s safe to say that the ground has still rubbed off on this generation of England players.

Five of them were asked by Channel4 Sport on TikTok to name the best club atmosphere they’ve played in. Of Declan Rice, Anthony Gordon, Conor Gallagher, Jordan Pickford and Kieran Trippier, only Pickford failed to mention Liverpool.

“Best atmosphere I’ve played in… probably Anfield,” said Arsenal’s Rice, before former Everton man Gordon launched an impressively passionate assessment of his old rival’s ground.

“Other than St James’ it’s Anfield, by far,” raved the Newcastle attacker. “I think because I’m from the city I grew up watching it. But I just think before the game when they sing You’ll Never Walk Alone, it’s top. It’s top level.”

“I’d say Anfield’s got to be up there,” Gallagher agreed. “I think it’s a pretty special atmosphere. When they sing their song before the game it always gives me a bit of goosebumps and gets me ready for the game.”

Finally, Trippier had to throw Liverpool in, too. “I’d say Elland Road and I’d say Anfield as well,” said the right-back.

Liverpool interested in Anthony Gordon

All of these testimonies will no doubt be satisfying to Liverpool supporters. But the one that really stands out is Gordon.

Obviously, as a former Everton player, you wouldn’t expect praise from the 23-year-old. But it isn’t just that. Liverpool have also been linked with a move to sign Gordon from Newcastle.

There have been claims that the Reds actually really do like Gordon and have their eye on him as a future signing.

It seems unlikely to happen this summer, though. Newcastle has reportedly slapped a £100m price-tag on Gordon. After signing him for £45m 18 months ago, few could truly argue with that price.

So, we wouldn’t expect that Gordon will enjoy the Anfield atmosphere as a home player anytime soon. This may well be one to watch somewhere down the line, though.
