Why Celtic are set for frustrating wait on Adam Idah deal despite Brendan Rodgers' intent

Celtic face a wait to complete a potential deal for Adam Idah despite Brendan Rodgers indicating he is keen to make a move for the Republic of Ireland international.

Idah enjoyed a stellar half-season on loan in Glasgow, scoring nine goals in 19 matches – all of which were crucial to securing points and trophies.

The Norwich City man also netted two derby goals against Rangers, including the cathartic 90th-minute winner in last weekend’s Scottish Cup Final.

After that match, Rodgers made it clear he is looking for the Celtic board to thrash out a deal with the Canaries for his permanent transfer. Subsequent reporting indicated that the club are ready to sanction that move.

However, the latest update suggests that this isn’t going to be a quick process.

Norwich City set to assess Adam Idah

Football Scotland reported on Friday night that Norwich are keen to have a look at Idah in pre-season and aren’t even entertaining the notion of a transfer at this stage despite a £6m fee being mooted.

Johannes Hoff Thorup has just been appointed as their new manager and the club are apparently keen on him getting a look at the 23-year-old.

Crucially, Idah is contracted at Norwich until 2028 so they are really in no rush to sell. If they see him as a key asset for their English Championship bid next term he won’t be going anywhere.

Celtic have tough transfer decisions to make

It all means that Celtic could be left waiting for their man. That also puts any deal at risk, especially if the Bhoys identify and pursue other targets in the meantime. Nobody wants this turning into a saga.

Celtic fans are keen to see the club make proactive moves in the transfer market and waiting all summer on Idah could well be counter-productive as there’s a risk it doesn’t come off and Celtic are left looking at late, less-than-ideal, options.

Idah himself has been non-committal about a Celtic stay but has been clear on how much he’s loved it in Glasgow compared to his time at Norwich.
