Fabrizio Romano has just delivered some unwelcome transfer news for Newcastle fans

It’s going to be a long summer for Newcastle United.

While there is hope that Alexander Isak won’t be sold and that Bruno Guimaraes will stay for at least another season, the Newcastle duo have consistently been linked with moves away.

Such is the relentless nature of rumours throughout the transfer window, it’s going to feel like an age until it slams shut at the end of August.

On a more positive note of course, the club are being linked with a number of exciting players.

Clearly, Newcastle won’t be able to sign every name touted as a Toon target but it’s something to get on board with nonetheless.

However, their plans to strengthen the defence have been somewhat derailed by news posted on X (formerly Twitter) by noted transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Fabrizio Romano has just shared some unwelcome transfer news for Newcastle

Indeed, Romano took to the social platform to reveal that Chelsea were in fact closing in on the signing of soon-to-be free agent, Tosin Adarabioyo.

The defender will be leaving current club Fulham upon the expiration of his contract and had held talks with the Magpies about a move.

There was even a confidence that he would sign on the dotted line alongside Lloyd Kelly, who will be leaving Bournemouth also as a free agent.

However, according to Romano, the Blues are now leading the chase to sign Adarabioyo despite the fact Newcastle have been working on the deal for weeks.

It’s got to the point where it would now be a surprise if Chelsea didn’t land the former Manchester City youngster.

This is very bad news for Newcastle United

Earlier this week, there had been a frustration that the deal was not advancing despite Newcastle’s attempts to wrap it up, which now looks foreshadowing.

Speaking to Geordie Boot Boys about seemingly missing out on the defender, HITC Football insider Graeme Bailey said: “This is a big blow to Newcastle’ plans, they still want and expect to get Lloyd Kelly, but getting Tosin for nothing was part of their summer plans, which would bolster their budget elsewhere.

“Newcastle, given what they were offering in terms of his standing within the squad, are shocked by Tosin’s decision not to accept their deal.”
