Phil Parkinson should now sign 'fabulous' Arthur Okonkwo alternative to fill Wrexham void - opinion

It’s all gone quiet on the Arthur Okonkwo to Wrexham front and Phil Parkinson should land a ‘fabulous’ alternative to the 22-year-old.

The most important piece of business Phil Parkinson could do at Wrexham this summer is signing a new No.1.

Wrexham currently have just veteran Mark Howard and Irishman Luke McNicholas as their only options, with the void desperate to be filled.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds desperately want to bring Arthur Okonkwo in permanently following his release from Arsenal after the 22-year-old starred on loan.

Unfortunately, several Championship and European clubs are weighing up a move, which makes it difficult for the Reds to compete despite the pulling power they have.

With Okonkwo perhaps demanding a hefty pay packet and setting his sights on playing at a higher level than League One, Parkinson must look elsewhere by signing one of the best goalkeepers in the third tier.

Marko Marosi is a fantastic option Phil Parkinson should consider

Okonkwo is the goalkeeper they want to build a team around but there are other players available on a free transfer who are just as good alternatives.

Wrexham are used to signing experienced players, having landed Steven Fletcher and James McClean last summer, but the most important area for experience is between the sticks – and Marosi possesses that in abundance.

The 30-year-old has amassed 300 appearances as a professional goalkeeper, 220 of which have come in League One during spells at Doncaster Rovers, Coventry City and Shrewsbury.

An eccentric player but a “fabulous” shot-stopper, as described by journalist Gabriel Sutton, Marosi is the perfect option for what Wrexham currently need.

He isn’t the most glamorous of names but he’s arguably approaching his peak years as a keeper and having experienced promotion from this level with the Sky Blues in 2020, the Slovakian would be a low-risk signing.

A new goalkeeper could set the tone for Wrexham

It’s the issue in Parkinson’s squad that is the most pressing however, landing a new goalkeeper ahead of a busy few months could set the tone for their business.

The importance of getting someone in early isn’t paramount, but if they don’t manage to sign Okonkwo and instead land a different option, they’ll need a full pre-season to work with the defence and build up an understanding.

It’s underestimated how crucial it is for the back three to know how their keeper plays, which is why they want to sign Okonkwo as he’s already in tune with the Wrexham backline.

Also, once a new No.1 arrives through the door, a huge weight will be relieved and the club can focus on other positions such as left back and striker.
