Player Everton once sold for £12m now set to be without a club after Fabrizio Romano's update

A player Everton once sold for £12million is now set to be without a club after Fabrizio Romano’s latest update.

Ahead of what is a massive summer at Goodison Park, transfer talk will dominate conversations as Sean Dyche looks to strengthen his squad.

But, with a buyer yet to be found and 777 Partners’ takeover now off, it remains to be seen just how active the club will be during the summer trading period.

After several failed transfer windows previously, Evertonians will be hopeful that the summer of 2024 will finally become a turning point.

Everton signed Dutch midfielder Davy Klaassen for £23.6million back in 2017. The now-31-year-old made just 16 appearances before leaving Goodison Park after just one year.

Klaassen completed an £12million move to Werder Bremen in 2018 before returning to Ajax in 2020. After spending three further years in Amsterdam, for former Everton man moved to Serie A giants Inter Milan, with whom he has spent the 2023/24 season.

But, with his contract set to expire, Romano has shared the latest.

The Italian transfer guru said: “Davy Klaassen will leave Inter, and he’s available as a free agent on the market. Understand the option to extend Klaassen’s contract until June 2025 has expired on Friday. He’s already being approached by several clubs, also open to staying in Italy.”

Everton cannot afford another Davy Klaessen

The days of signing players who underperform after being signed for big transfer fees need to be made a thing of the past.

Klaassen was the perfect example of a player who was nowhere near ready for the rigours of the Premier League and signed with very little due diligence.

Since the culmination of the 2023/24 season, the Toffees have been linked with Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips – and the former Leeds man feels like another expensive mistake waiting to happen.

Of course, he could rediscover his form, but after his torrid spell at West Ham United, it feels like a gamble that might be worth avoiding, particularly when considering what has happened in years gone by.
