Trump biographer says he'd be 'surprised' if ex-president gets fewer than 30 days in jail

Donald Trump's own biographer would be shocked if the former president were sentenced to fewer than 30 days in jail after he was convicted on 34 felony counts in his New York hush money cover-up case.

Trump started fundraising after the jury of his peers found him guilty in the case where he was accused of paying off a porn star to hide an alleged affair for the purposes of impacting the 2016 election. Trump's biographer, David Cay Johnston, has some strong feelings about whether the ex-president will end up incarcerated for his crimes.

Johnston appeared on MSNBC on Saturday, where the host asked about Johnston's "strong opinion" on Trump's prospects for imprisonment.

"Do you think Donald Trump could see jail time?" the host asked. Johnston replied, "Absolutely."

"I know that most of the legal commentators have been saying they think it is unlikely," he said. "While that is true that wealthy white men with no past record in their 70s, typically on a first offense for white-collar crime, don't go to jail, sentencing also depends on the behavior of the accused."

He continued:

"If you are contrite you acknowledge that you did wrong, you typically get a lighter sentence. In Donald's case, he has ten criminal contempts. After the jury came in he continued attacking the judge and attacking the system. I think he is inviting Judge Merchan to give him a sentence behind bars. Frankly, I will be surprised if he does not get at least 30 days behind bars."
