Manchester United will be gutted after Jadon Sancho's Champions League final display - Opinion

On Saturday night at Wembley, Jadon Sancho was on the losing side in the Champions League final much to Manchester United’s annoyance.

Jadon Sancho had a bizarre season during 2023/24 and it all started off poorly as he fell out with Erik ten Hag.

After failing to apologise to the manager, Sancho was sent to train with the kids and his unwillingness to apologise to this date led to his January exit.

In the winter transfer window, Sancho was sent out on loan to Borussia Dortmund where he had his rise to stardom in the first place leading to his £73m move in 2021.

During his half-season on loan, the Englishman has found his feet again after two poor seasons at Manchester United. But in the Champions League final loss to Real Madrid, he failed to impress which won’t have pleased the decision-makers at Old Trafford.

What Manchester United will be thinking after Jadon Sancho fails to perform

For the past few months, Borussia Dortmund have been marketing Sancho really strongly, telling the world how brilliant he is and how United are the problem.

This had the club likely hopeful that the Bundesliga side might end up wanting to purchase him for a decent fee this summer.

Before the final, there was a hope that Sancho would be key in winning Dortmund the trophy which might have forced their hand in bringing Sancho permanently.

After the Champions League final, however, there’s little chance of this happening as he had a woeful outing and put in a display which will be like many United fans will remember him putting in at Old Trafford.

Failure to sell Sancho will result in the Englishman likely heading on loan again. However, without a transfer fee coming in, United may struggle to justify bringing in a new right-winger, with much now depending on Mason Greenwood bringing in a healthy transfer fee in order for the club to sign Michael Olise.

How did Jadon Sancho perform in the Champions League final?

In what was the biggest game of his career to date, Sancho fumbled big time and didn’t show any of the improvements he’d previously shown in a Dortmund kit in 2024.

FotMob gave him a match rating of just 6.2 which was one of the lowest in the entire Dortmund team. His match stats tell the full story.

As seen from the stats here, Sancho did very little against Real Madrid and for much of the game was a bit of a ghost making zero impact.

This isn’t the kind of performance which will convince Dortmund to part with their money, and so it’s back to square one, and likely another year on loan for the 24-year-old.
