The intertwining of Kentucky and Arkansas athletics has been bordering on incestuous lately, but before there was John Calipari, DJ Wagner, Adou Thiero, Zvonimir Ivisic, and a host of recruit flips, there was Lonnie Greene.
As the Kentucky Director of Cross Country/Track & Field and Head Coach since the 2018-19 season, Lonnie Greene has led the Wildcats to tremendous success. But before that, Greene was an Arkansas legend. Now, his icon status will officially be etched in the history books as Greene was inducted into the Arkansas Track and Field Hall of Fame on Friday. Greene joined seven others to be enshrined in the department’s 29th inductee class.
On the honor, Greene said, “It’s such an honor to be recognized for this award. I’m blessed to have spent a lot of quality time with the Arkansas Track & Field program, student-athletes, and staff while in Fayetteville and I’m grateful for the moments we spent achieving great things and what they have done to get me to where I am today.”
Greene spent 16 seasons at the University of Arkansas, starting in 1996 as an assistant coach with the women’s program before being promoted to associate head coach. In 2004, he was named USTFCCCA National Assistant Coach of the Year.
In addition to overseeing the success of multiple individual athletes, Arkansas finished in the top 25 at both the NCAA Women’s Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships in five of the last six seasons of his time there.
Luckily for Kentucky, Greene now bleeds blue. In 2022, he signed an extension that will keep him in Lexington until 2027. Congrats, Coach Greene!
