The Crimson Countdown is officially on for the 2024 Oklahoma football season. Fans have been waiting for what feels like forever with this one. The Sooners are finally and officially joining the SEC.

The 2023 season was a rebound one for head coach Brent Venables, getting the program back to its standard. OU went 10-3 in Venables’ second season, now it’s time for year No. 3.

Every day as we get closer to kickoff, SoonerScoop.com will count down the days with you. Starting with No. 99 and working our way to No. 0, we’ll be there every step of the way.

Crimson Countdown: No. 89 Eli Merck

2023 stats: Played in two games, no stats.

2024 outlook:

Merck actually played in two games for OU last season. He came to OU after a decorated high school career.

Merck was a two-time state champion and set a bunch of receiving records at his high school. He made all-state in South Carolina three times.

It obviously would be a surprise if Merck ever sees the field at receiver, but he will provide nice depth, practice depth.

And if he plays, he will be ready for his moment. His job, though will be to help get the OU secondary ready for what’s coming that week.

2024 wide receiver outlook

There’s no offensive position with more depth than wide receiver. While the Sooners lose leading receiver Drake Stoops to the NFL, they return everyone else. Jalil Farooq and Andrel Anthony are both back, but both missed most of the spring with injuries. Nic Anderson, who led the team in touchdowns last season, is also back. And Jayden Gibson looks to have a bigger role next year after a strong spring. But the X factor for the Sooners might be Purdue transfer Deion Burks, who showed everyone he might be the best weapon OU has during the Spring Game.
