Alabama Sen. Tuberville And Texas Sen. Cruz Lead Charge To Repeal Biden’s Natural Gas Tax

In a bold move to counter the Biden administration's Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), U.S. Senators Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) and Ted Cruz (R-TX) have introduced legislation to repeal the contentious natural gas tax.

This tax, which imposes hefty fees on energy companies, is poised to have a devastating impact on American consumers, particularly those in lower-income households. As the senators argue, this misguided policy prioritizes the agenda of "woke climate activists" over the well-being of the American people.

The natural gas tax, a key component of the IRA, is set to take effect in 2024, with the levy starting at $900 per ton of methane emissions and escalating to $1,500 per ton by 2026.

According to Tuberville, this tax will not only handicap technological innovation in the energy sector but also drive up the cost of household energy bills for the 180 million Americans and 5.5 million businesses that rely on natural gas.

“The Biden administration has once again prioritized woke climate activists over the American people,” said Senator Tuberville. “Since day one in office, Joe Biden has waged war on American energy – driving up costs and sending American jobs overseas. The last thing Americans need right now are higher taxes and government red tape. I am proud to join this legislation which puts American taxpayers first and works toward American energy independence.”

The proposed natural gas tax will disproportionately burden lower-income Alabamians and Americans, who can ill afford the additional financial strain. With energy costs already soaring, this new tax will further exacerbate the challenges faced by families and small businesses struggling to make ends meet. As the senators argue, the Biden administration's policies have consistently prioritized the agenda of "woke climate activists" over the needs of the American people.

The legislation to repeal the natural gas tax has garnered support from a diverse coalition of senators, including John Barrasso (R-WY), Mike Braun (R-IN), Katie Britt (R-AL), Tom Cotton (R-AR), John Hoeven (R-ND), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS), Mike Lee (R-UT), Roger Marshall (R-KS), Pete Ricketts (R-NE), and J.D. Vance (R-OH).

Complementing the Senate's efforts, Congressman August Pfluger (R-TX-11) has introduced companion legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives, which has already passed in the 118th Congress. This demonstrates the unified front against the natural gas tax, with both chambers of Congress working to protect American consumers and businesses from its detrimental effects.

The legislation to repeal the natural gas tax has garnered support from a diverse array of industry stakeholders, including the American Public Gas Association, the Independent Petroleum Association of America, the American Exploration & Production Council (AXPC), Permian Basin Petroleum, the Alabama Municipal Electric Authority, Huntsville Utilities, and the Electric Cities of Alabama. These organizations recognize the profound impact this tax will have on their operations and the communities they serve.

If the highly unworkable natural gas tax is allowed to be implemented, the consequences will be severe. It will not only handicap technological innovation in the energy sector but also reduce the supply of affordable energy, ultimately increasing both costs and emissions. This scenario is precisely what the senators and their allies are seeking to avoid, as they champion the interests of American taxpayers and energy independence.

The natural gas tax is just one facet of the Biden administration's broader war on American energy. Since taking office, the president has pursued a range of policies that have driven up energy costs and sent American jobs overseas.

From the revocation of the Keystone XL pipeline permit to the implementation of greenhouse gas emissions performance measures, the administration's actions have consistently prioritized the agenda of "woke climate activists" over the needs of the American people, according to Tuberville.

Senators Tuberville and Cruz have steadfastly tried to counter the Biden administration's energy policies and champion American energy independence.

They have sponsored resolutions to overturn the administration's gas furnace rule and greenhouse gas emissions performance measure rule, as well as introduced legislation to save clean, safe nuclear power and restore American energy independence.
