Mike Florio indicates the one dream in Patrick Mahomes' career that would 'keep him going' in the NFL

Patrick Mahomes has been a revelation for the NFL since he became the starter at quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs and Mike Florio believes only one thing can keep him motivated.

When Patrick Mahomes was drafted in 2017, behind fellow QB Mitchell Trubisky, no one would have pictured what was to come in the next six seasons.

In his first season, after taking the reigns from Alex Smith, he guided the Kansas City Chiefs to the AFC Championship.

However, the G.O.A.T Tom Brady denied Mahomes the fairytale story in overtime.

Patrick Mahomes won his first ring in 2019 and does not waste any time in adding another two

The future two-time MVP did not crumble in the face of adversity and went two steps further in 2019. They defeated the San Francisco 49ers to secure the franchise’s second ring and Mahomes’ first of three.

Fast forward to 2024, Mahomes has three rings to his name, and MVP awards in all three victories, in addition to two regular-season MVP awards.

This rare combination of accolades is a milestone that Brady did not reach until 37 years old and Joe Montana until 34.

At 28 years old, for the respective age of the quarterback position, Mahomes is considered very young.

When you appreciate that Tom Brady did not retire ‘officially’ until he was 45, Mahomes has plenty of years in his prime ahead of him.

Mahomes has explained why he could retire earlier than many people expect

Nevertheless, the six-time Pro Bowler has indicated that retirement could come earlier than some people anticipate.

Mahomes has two beautiful children Bronze and Sterling with his adoring wife Brittany. Being family-orientated, the Chiefs quarterback has said that he wants to see his children grow up and be a massive figure in their lives.

Therefore, if his football career was to hinder his chance of watching his children grow up then he would draw the curtain on his career.

Mike Florio believes that one deciding factor with stop Mahomes from retiring

On Pro Football Talk, Mike Florio had a suspicion that one key goal, if left unconquered, would deter Mahomes from retirement.

“Brady’s got 7 [rings], and I think Mahomes knows that he is not going to be considered the undisputed G.O.A.T unless, or until, he catches Brady. That is what is going to keep him going,” the NFL expert explained on the daytime show.

Mahomes is in a unique position that no one else has found themselves in, and that is a real possibility of matching the quarterback ring record (7).

Mahomes may have to decide if Brady’s record or family is more important

Florio implies that the illustrious feat will be too tempting to say goodbye to and leave for someone else to try and conquer.

Ultimately, Mahomes will be eager to get as close as possible to, or even take over the record.

His age is on his side but it will all come down to his determination by the time he could consider clearing out his locker.
