Tokyo stocks open higher after advance of U.S. Dow index

Tokyo stocks opened higher Monday, tracking the advance of the U.S. Dow Jones Industrial Average late last week as concern about stubborn inflation receded.

In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 369.17 points, or 0.96 percent, from Friday to 38,857.07. The broader Topix index was up 26.34 points, or 0.95 percent, at 2,798.83.

On the top-tier Prime Market, gainers were led by insurance, bank and securities house issues.

At 9 a.m., the U.S. dollar fetched 157.17-20 yen compared with 157.19-29 yen in New York and 157.14-15 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Friday.

The euro was quoted at $1.0850-0854 and 170.53-62 yen against $1.0844-0854 and 170.56-66 yen in New York and $1.0822-0823 and 170.06-10 yen in Tokyo late Friday afternoon.
