Football: Samurai Blue prepare to face Myanmar in Yangon

Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo, Freiburg winger Ritsu Doan and other members of the Japanese men's football team went through their paces in Chiba near Tokyo on Monday in preparation for the upcoming World Cup qualifier away to Myanmar.

The squad will fly Tuesday to Yangon ahead of the Asian second-round qualifying match at Thuwunna Stadium in Myanmar's commercial capital on Thursday.

Hajime Moriyasu's men have so far secured a maximum 12 points, including three from a forfeit against North Korea, guaranteeing they will advance to the third Asian qualifying round for the 2026 World Cup as one of the top two teams in Group B.

Squad members practiced passing movements from the back and simulated match situations during the session. Veteran FC Tokyo left-back Yuto Nagatomo trained separately while dealing with leg stiffness.

The Samurai Blue are aiming for their eighth consecutive trip to the World Cup finals. They will play their last Group B match against Syria at Edion Peace Wing Hiroshima on June 11.
