Rangers links intensify as yet another Latin American target is officially dropped from squad

Thomas Galdames is a name on every Rangers fans lips at the moment as the club scour the globe for fresh transfer talent.

The 25-year-old Chileno defender looks to fit the Nils Koppen Ibrox transfer profile and it’s all eyes on Argentina as the links continue to swirl.

Now, the Rangers transfer hunt for the left-sided centre-back has taken a fresh twist as current club Godoy Cruz prepare for their latest match.

As the sounds around Rangers continue to ramp up, suggestions that Thomas Galdames has already played his last game in the Argentine Primera Division might actually be correct.

Galdames dropped from Godoy Cruz

As if only to add fuel to the raging transfer fire surrounding Thomas Galdames, Godoy Cruz have already released their latest squad list.

Ahead of the Argentine top tier clash with Independiente, Galdames has not been included in manager Daniel Oldra’s 23-man squad.

The news will only add inflame the links to Rangers as the Ibrox side continue to negotiate for fresh transfer deals this summer.

Latin America is very much a region on Nils Koppen’s radar with the Belgian recruitment guru flying out for a special TransferRoom conference in Cancun this week.

The links to Thomas Galdames are supplemented by reports suggesting Rangers are interested in Peñarol talent Damian Garcia.

Rangers have also confirmed the signing of Colombian winger Oscar Cortes whilst the Gers brought Brazilian left-back Jefte to the club this summer.

Rangers target keeps transfer cards close

The absence of Thomas Galdames from the Godoy Cruz squad also comes as the defender tries to negotiate a move away from Argentina.

In comments attributed to Galdames over the weekend, the defender is clear that he sees his future across the Atlantic.

Whilst there’s no mention of Rangers – even if the centre-back was directly asked about the Ibrox side – Galdames’ absence will only intensify rumours surrounding the club.

“I don’t know anything,” said Galdames, as quoted by Chilean publication En Cancha.

“I prefer not to say anything, not to be told anything until it is something concrete because there is always a lot of speculation and one gets excited.

“So until there is something concrete I won’t go to ask anything, let it be as light as possible.”

Expanding on his plans, Galdames confirmed that an exit is in the pipeline.

“I don’t know anything, I have a contract in Godoy Cruz until December and mine and their idea is that they sell me now,” said Galdames.

“My representative is working on that, they are not issues that concern me and I focus only on the parties.

“I know that going to Europe in a competitive league, before here in South America I am going to continue growing.

“My career has been very progressive, especially upwards. I hope something comes out in June or July. Today the market opened, so in these months we will have news.”

Thomas Galdames has made 49 appearances since joining Godoy Cruz from Union Española 18 months go.
