Anthony Gordon decision is even more laughable after Gareth Southgate announcement - opinion

Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon is set to miss out on a very unique opportunity.

The 23-year-old is currently with the England squad as they prepare for Euro 2024, with the Three Lions set to compete in their first pre-tournament friendly tonight at St James’ Park.

It is the first time that the England men’s team has played at Newcastle United‘s home since 2005, with Toon defender Kieran Trippier set to captain his country. It will be a great moment for him, leading England out at the stadium he has called home since January 2022.

However, he will not be joined in the England XI by his Newcastle teammate Anthony Gordon.

That is because Gareth Southgate has confirmed that Gordon will not be involved at St James’ Park.

The reason he misses out is because of an ankle injury, but he is expected to be fit for the Euros in Germany later this month. That is the most important thing, but it must be disappointing for Newcastle’s number 10 to miss out on playing for England at St James’ Park.

If he had not moved to the Magpies last year, he probably would not be in this position right now. It would have been a great moment to represent his country at his domestic home, yet he has been robbed of that opportunity.

Gordon still hurt from Manchester United incident

The ankle injury that Gordon is suffering from is the same one that ruled him out of Newcastle’s last game of the Premier League season and the subsequent trip to Australia.

He sustained it during the defeat to Manchester United on May 15th, and the incident is now even more laughable almost three weeks later.

Gordon got hurt on the back of a challenge from Sofyan Amrabat – a challenge that shockingly did not result in a penalty.

It was a disgraceful decision at the time, with Bruno Guimaraes furious not to be given a penalty. As for Gordon, he spoke very openly about the incident after the game. He defended the referee for not giving it, but could not understand why VAR did not intervene.

Replays clearly showed that Amrabat stood on the back of Gordon’s leg, forcing him to the ground in the penalty area. It is almost three weeks since the incident and Gordon is still suffering because of it.

Yet someone VAR did not think it was worthy of a penalty…
