What impact not being in Europe will actually have on Newcastle's summer transfer budget - journalist

It is going to be a summer of change at Newcastle United, but it is unclear how much change there will be after missing out on Europe.

The Magpies watched on in despair as Manchester United lifted the FA Cup on Saturday, meaning they will competing in Europe rather than us. It is a devastating end to what has been a gruelling season that hinted towards having a happy ending.

Instead, it was typical Newcastle United, who could not rely on the best team in the world to do them a favour.

Now Eddie Howe’s side are bracing themselves for a year of just domestic duties, which has led to Matt Ritchie and Paul Dummett being released. They were no longer required, and are leaving St James’ Park when their contracts expire.

However, there is hope that missing out on Europe will not lead to Alexander Isak or Bruno Guimaraes being sold. From a PSR perspective, it looks like we will be able to retain their services.

Newcastle United’s transfer budget will not hindered after missing out on Europe

But who joins them at Newcastle United will depend on the transfer budget. The Magpies are going to miss out on prize money they would have won for being in the Conference League, as well as matchday revenue.

That is a financial blow, but not one that is going to have a major impact on how much cash Howe can spend on new players this summer.

That is the view of the Athletic’s Chris Waugh, who has spoke about Newcastle’s transfer budget after missing out on Europe on the latest episode of Pod On The Tyne.

“In terms of the actual here and now for Newcastle United’s summer budget, the effect is minimal to non-existent,” he said.

“The budget is already there. Newcastle have budgeted for not necessarily having the money that would come in from being in Europe, which is not the transformative money that comes in from being in the Champions League. But it is also not negligible.

“If Newcastle had been in the Conference League, they’re probably losing between £10million and £20million depending on how well they would have done in the competition.

“For this transfer window, it’s not going to affect Newcastle’s business in a purely financial sense. Whether it stops players wanting to come, I think is unlikely.”

What missing out on Europe could mean for Newcastle

The transfer budget will not suddenly be decreased after missing out on Europe. Newcastle budgeted with the idea that they would miss out, which is a wise decision given what has happened.

But while the amount Howe can spend remains the same, how he is able to spend it could change.

It may suddenly be a bit tougher for the Magpies to tempt players to Tyneside, although it was not an issue when they brought in the likes of Bruno, Isak and Sven Botman. They signed up for the project, and quickly saw how it could play out as they helped guide the club into the Champions League.

That will have to be the selling point when talking to targets this summer, as Newcastle’s recruitment team will not be able to offer the lure of competing in Europe. That could lead to the club having to pay slightly above market value, which may mean they get less out of their summer budget.

But Newcastle will be boosted if they can utilise the free agent market. Lloyd Kelly appears to be on his way from Bournemouth, and Newcastle are hoping that he is followed by Tosin Adarabioyo. Both players are going to be available on free transfers, which will allow the Magpies to spend more money elsewhere.
