‘An exciting experiment’: Gareth Southgate shares what he is doing with Trent Alexander-Arnold in England training

Trent Alexander-Arnold has been a key man for Liverpool for many years now, with the right-back improving massively under Jurgen Klopp.

He has become one of the most important players at Anfield, with his ability at both ends of the pitch crucial to the club’s success in recent times.

A new era now awaits the defender and the Reds, with Arne Slot coming into the dugout to replace Klopp.

Alexander-Arnold has already backed the new boss, with the right-back trusting the decision from the powers that be on Merseyside.

The defender could be involved in one of the major changes Slot could make in his early days at the club, with a move into midfield an option for the academy graduate next season.

It is a position he became familiar with under Klopp, having often adopted an inverted midfield full-back role for the Reds.

England manager Gareth Southgate has followed a similar approach with the Liverpool star on the international stage in recent times, and he has now revealed that the Three Lions have been working on this approach in training.

“It’s something that we’ve wanted to see,” Southgate said on the Football Daily podcast. “Of course it’s an area of the pitch where I feel he can play and has played for us, and feel he can play very well.

“It’s also an area of the pitch where he, with the ball, has experienced with his club, but without the ball we’re testing it really.

“But whatever we do in that area of the pitch, we’re either going to be testing a young player or testing somebody that hasn’t exactly played in that same position.

“So for us that’s quite an exciting experiment and we’re enjoying that time on the training pitch to look at those things.”

Will Trent Alexander-Arnold play in midfield for Liverpool?

England are busy preparing for this summer’s Euro 2024, with the Three Lions set to take on Bosnia & Herzegovina and Iceland in friendly clashes.

Liverpool icon Alexander-Arnold has been named as a midfielder in the latest squad, but whether or not he gets game time there remains to be seen.

The Anfield ace will likely be competing with the likes of world-class stars Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham for minutes on the pitch this summer.

He could, however, slot into a midfield role for Liverpool next season, particularly given the emergence of fellow right-back Conor Bradley.

The young Northern Ireland international has followed in Alexander-Arnold’s footsteps in not only progressing from the academy to the first team, but shining on the big stage for the senior side.

Former Premier League striker Gary Lineker really wants to see Alexander-Arnold in midfield for the Reds next season, but fellow ex-professional Roy Keane is adamant that the defender should not be handed the role for the Three Lions.
