Warne can solve key Derby County issue by signing 'brilliant' gem who just won a title - opinion

Derby County should now try to sign a ‘brilliant’ striker who just won promotion to the Premier League.

Derby County finished the 2023/24 season with the joint-lowest goal tally in the top six.

The Rams had major issues with their attack, with injury after injury denting their chances of automatic promotion.

They still managed to return to the Championship, though their frontline is now looking even more bare than before.

Derby have now released Martyn Waghorn and Dwight Gayle, while Tyreece John-Jules returned to Arsenal following the conclusion of his loan spell.

Paul Warne has been left with very limited options and up top and he needs to act very quickly if he is to sort out their huge No.9 problem.

The Rams may struggle to compete with Championship clubs to bring in permanent signings, but going in for a loan deal may work out in their favour.

Derby’s attack was definitely on the older side last season and now they should look to youth to freshen things up.

Tom Cannon could be the answer for Derby County

One player who could make a real difference at Pride Park is Tom Cannon, who has just achieved promotion with Leicester City.

The striker joined the Foxes in a £7.5m deal last summer, after netting eight goals in 19 starts while on loan at Preston.

Half of the Championship wanted to sign Cannon from Everton and he eventually ended up at the King Power Stadium, though it hasn’t really worked out for him.

The ‘brilliant‘ 21-year-old suffered a back injury at the start of the season and failed to claw his way into the team after that, managing only three starts and 13 appearances in the second tier.

Cannon’s only two goals for Leicester came in a 4-1 win over Huddersfield on New Year’s Day.

With Leicester swiftly returning to the Premier League, it would surely suggest Cannon’s chances will rapidly decrease.

The Rams would surely face competition for the striker

The Foxes have plenty of talent in their attack and will surely bring in more fresh faces this summer too.

With Cannon still having four years left on his contract, Leicester would likely consider loaning him back out to the Championship after a difficult campaign.

There is no doubt that Derby would face a lot of competition for his signature, but keeping Cannon in the Midlands could also offer them an advantage in their pursuit.

Given that top clubs in the Championship were after him last summer, the Rams could pull off a real coup if they could bring him toPride Park.

Derby are desperately going to need a proven goalscorer among their ranks if they are to stay up this term, and they certainly can’t be relying on the likes of James Collins and Conor Washington to do that job.
