'Underestimated that': Anthony Gordon now shares what shocked him immediately after joining Newcastle

Anthony Gordon has shared the one thing that surprised him when he first arrived at Newcastle United last year.

The 23-year-old became one of the Magpies’ most expensive signings ever in January 2023, arriving at St James’ Park from Everton for an initial £40million.

It was viewed as a huge amount of money at the time, with a lot of onlookers questioning why he cost that much.

But Anthony Gordon has since gone on to prove them wrong, becoming a real superstar in black and white. His first full season as a Newcastle United player has been incredible, with Gordon arguably proving to be Eddie Howe’s best player. He has become decisive in the final third, getting double figures in goals and assists in the Premier League.

He is also adored by the Toon Army, who immediately took to him when he arrived from Everton. They chanted his name straight away, despite him being berated by Newcastle fans on every other visit to St James’ Park when he was a Toffee.

Anthony Gordon makes claim about Newcastle fans

Gordon immediately became one of the Geordies, and he has now provided details of his first impression of Newcastle fans after joining the club last year.

He has been speaking to the Channel Four YouTube channel ahead of England’s friendly at St James’ Park, and was asked if he thinks there are similarities between football fans in the North East and on Merseyside.

“There’s definitely similarities [between the North East and Merseyside],” he said.

“They’re both working class, same types of people – funny, a lot of character, always up for a laugh, light-hearted.

“I think the passion in football surprised me a lot. I didn’t quite realise how big Newcastle was until I got there. The fans are everywhere, no matter which part of the city you’re in. I definitely underestimated that part.”

Gordon set to miss special experience with Newcastle fans

Until you are in it, you probably do not realise how big it is. Football is everything in Newcastle. It is a one club city, with every football fan uniting together to support the boys in black and white.

Gordon quickly discovered that when he arrived on Tyneside, and it is something he has embraced ever since. He has become part of the community, while he plays in a way that gets supporters on his side. Gordon is direct with the ball, while he works tremendously hard without it. There is a lot of honesty in his game, and the fans in attendance always admire that.

Sadly, they will not get the chance to cheer him on in an England shirt at St James’ Park. That is because he is going to miss Monday’s friendly against Bosnia And Herzegovina due to an ankle injury.

While he will not be involved, another Newcastle United player will be. Kieran Trippier is going to captain the Three Lions, as he prepares for his first St James’ Park start since March.
