You’ve seen the combine drills hundreds of times. The routine quickly becomes monotonous, until someone does something so spectacular and surprising that it captivates the masses. Noah King did just that Sunday afternoon in Lexington.
King entered the Kentucky Sunday Showcase camp as a three-star talent with only two Power Five scholarship offers. They’re about to start piling up for the Cincinnati native.
“My mindset was I’m going to dominate this camp and leave with an offer. You gotta go in with that being the goal, have confidence,” King told KSR. His plan worked out to perfection.
Vince Marrow had King on his radar. Also a track star, the day before his trip to Lexington he earned the silver medal for Hamilton High School in the Division I State 4×1 competition. The Big Dog was eager to see how well that speed translated in person.
“We got eyes on you buddy. You better stretch,” Marrow told King.
“I’m good,” King responded.
“You sure?”
“Yeah, I’m good.”
Marrow thought King would run in the 4.6-range. He was mistaken.
“I didn’t know the time right away. I just saw the coaches freaking out and Coach Marrow making calls. I’m probably not even done slowing down and I see Coach Marrow making calls, freaking out. These (current Kentucky) players are freaking out, laughing. I asked them, ‘What did I run?’ You ran a 4.47 and didn’t even stretch.”
Timed with a laser, Kentucky saw all they needed to see from King. However, the players wanted to see if he could do it again. A showman, King happily obliged and ran a few ticks faster at 4.45.
King Schedules Official Visit with Another Talented DB
King concluded camp by working out with safeties coach Frank Buffano in individual drills and competing in one-on-ones, primarily lining up opposite of 6-foot-6 tight end Seneca Driver. Following the rainy afternoon, Marrow officially extended King a scholarship offer.
King spent the offseason working hard to prove he had the athletic tools to be a Power Five prospect. He posted similar official combine times at a UA Next Camp. Confident most teams would wake up this summer, as soon as he heard he got the offer, he was ready to schedule an official visit.
King tells KSR he will officially visit Kentucky on June 18 with four-star CB Dawayne Galloway. “That’s my boy. That’s my brother… Me and him, that’s money.”
Kentucky isn’t the only school captivated by King. Michigan has entered the chat and now the National Champs want to see him train in person. He’ll be in Ann Arbor for a camp on June 10. He also has a mega-camp on the docket for June 12 when he visits family in California. Other Power Five programs have reached out in the last 24 hours, including South Carolina, Nebraska, and Rutgers. They will not be the last to join the party, but they will fall behind in line to Kentucky.
“(Marrow) told me straight up yesterday, ‘When I like somebody, I get that dude. That’s how it works. You’re coming here. Whatever I gotta do, you’re coming here.'”
