The Special One could descend on Ibrox this summer as Rangers return rhetoric smashed

Rangers fans have never had the pleasure of Jose Mourinho’s company at Ibrox.

The legendary Portuguese manager, 61, has never crossed paths with the famous Glasgow Rangers across the multiple top sides the Special One has managed.

Rangers have avoided FC Porto, Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and AS Roma on Jose’s watch.

But now the Ibrox side could be about to face off against Mourinho for the first time should the stars align in qualification for the revamped Champions League.

That’s after Jose took the reins at Fenerbahce, sparking extraordinary scenes in Turkey’s capital Istanbul.

Rangers v Mourinho in Champions League?

Rangers have been boosted by the news that they will be seeded for Champions League qualification this summer.

Entering the competition at the QR3 stage, the Gers will still be seeded should they make it through into the playoff.

And it’s in either round where the Ibrox side could face off against Jose Mourinho after the legendary manager was unveiled at Fenerbahce.

Fenerbahce enter Champions League qualifying at the QR3 stage just like Rangers.

With the Turks unseeded, the are a potential opponent alongside the likes of USG, Twente or Dynamo Kiev at this stage of the tournament.

Should both sides fail to draw each other in QR3 and qualify for the playoff, then they could once again be drawn against each other in the Champions League playoff.

There are no easy games at this level and Fenerbahce boast some immense talent and experience.

Throw Jose Mourinho into the mix and we’re not convinced Rangers fans will be too keen for a first ever meeting.

Kent handed Fenerbahce lifeline

The appointment of Jose Mourinho also hands an unlikely lifeline to ex-Rangers winger Ryan Kent.

Kent, 27, made the switch to Istanbul last summer at the end of his Ibrox contract but under Ismail Kartal was eventually frozen out of the side.

Making only one league appearance for the Super Lig runners up in 2024, all the talk heading into the summer has been about Kent being released from his Fenerbahce deal.

The appointment of Mourinho hands the winger a timely lifeline and might even silence some desperate chatter about a potential return to Rangers.

Kent spent five years in Glasgow after initially joining from Liverpool on loan but in his final campaign with the Gers put in a dismal return of only three goals.

Since then the winger’s career has been on a steady decline and let’s hope Mourinho can help Kenty find his form in Turkish football.
