'Criminal'..'Devastating'..Arsenal fans react as Rangers line up player Arteta wants to keep

Rangers have already signed two exciting players for next season and Philippe Clement has his sites set on another who could be a real coup.

Reuell Walters is one of Arsenal’s highest rated academy players and are desperate to keep him, however, the 19-year old is looking for regular first-team football.

According to The Scotsman, Rangers are one of several clubs looking to offer the England youth cap this in what would be a move that would frustrate fans of the Gunners after Mikel Arteta called him a ‘top prospect’.

Arsenal fans don’t want to lose Reuell Walters

With over 20 squad appearances this season, it is strange that Mikel Arteta never even game the versatile defender a few cameo appearances to keep his senior players fresh.

Like Dujon Sterling, it would appear that this lack of activity has seen the 2022/23 academy player of the year decide to keep his options open and not renew his contract at the Emirates, a decision first revealed by The Athletic that saw fans unhappy with their manager.

Walters profile is one Nils Koppen should keep targeting

It is easy to see why they are upset.

A similar situation would have been if Nathan Patterson left Rangers without the club receiving a fee.

Rangers landed a record fee when Patterson left and it was quickly followed by Calvin Bassey who was brought to Ibrox via a similar deal from Leicester City.

Sterling is already looking like he too could bring in a sizeable fee for whatever position a club would want him for.

Reuell Walters prefers playing in the middle of defence and on the right-hand side.

Thomas Galdames has been identified as a possible option for the left so, with Jefte already signed, there could be an entirely different look to the defence.

It’s reassuring that social media is full of Arsenal fans hoping that Walters can be persuaded to stay despite him issuing a statement on Instagram saying that he is leaving.

The club’s official released list, curiously, doesn’t have his name on it though amid reports of a last gasp attempt to keep him in London.

This is exactly the type of profile Rangers should be looking at from England.

Not washed-up players in their 30s or players who used to be good and need to be fixed or who have had a few injuries.

With cross-border regulations still benefitting Scottish clubs when it comes to young English players, it is a loophole that Nils Koppen should continue to take advantage of, especially for players as talented as Walters.
