Just one more team stands in Kentucky’s way of its first ever College World Series appearance: The Oregon State Beavers.
Oregon State won the Corvallis Regional in three games, knocking off Tulane and UC-Irvine (twice) to set up the matchup with Kentucky.
Kentucky dominated its Regional as well, outscoring Western Michigan, Illinois, and Indiana State 21-9 over the three games to wrap up its second consecutive Lexington Regional victory.
The Beavers enter the Super Regional with a 45-14 (19-10) record. Oregon State won 27 of its 29 games played at home, but was just 9-10 in road games this season.
It will be a step up in competition for the Cats, as Oregon State has compiled 23 Top-100 RPI wins this season.
The Beavers also boast one of the best players in all of college baseball, Travis Bazzana. Bazzana, who is the No. 2 overall prospect in many MLB Mock Drafts, hit for a .419 batting average this season with 16 doubles, 28 home runs, and 65 RBI.
Kentucky improved to 43-14 (22-8) over the weekend and are now just two wins away from tying the program record for most wins in a season (45 in 2012). The Cats likely would have already surpassed that record if they played their three non-conference games that were canceled (Louisville, Xavier, Wright State).
Without the presence of the Railbird festival, Kentucky could very well set a new program record for attendance in the Super Regional.
“I’m seeing 5800 right there as the attendance,” Kentucky’s Émilien Pitre said on Sunday. “It felt like 10,000. I can’t imagine what it’s going to feel like next weekend.”
Kentucky and Oregon State will be meeting for the first time ever this week. Dates and times will be revealed upon the conclusion of Monday’s games.
