Manchester United should be front of the queue to sign £85m player that Rio Ferdinand says is 'great' - Opinion

The latest news out of Real Madrid of Kylian Mbappe arriving spells bad news for one player, and Manchester United should take advantage.

On Monday, June 3rd, Real Madrid confirmed what was the most predictable transfer of the summer, with Kylian Mbappe officially becoming a new Galactico.

This sees him depart PSG for free, making the move he’s always dreamt of, following in the footsteps of his hero and Manchester United legend and Madrid icon, Cristiano Ronaldo.

His arrival sees Madrid boast probably the best options of any club in the world up top, with Vinicius Junior and the next big thing Endrick also in the ranks.

This trio are likely to dominate the Bernabeu for years to come which leaves Rodrygo in a weird situation as he won’t be guaranteed his place.

While this will be a tough situation for Madrid to resolve, United could very well help them out and should be front of the queue to bring the Brazilian to Old Trafford.

What has been reported about Rodrygo should give Manchester United confidence

With Rodrygo’s place and importance within the Madrid squad set to diminish, he could be set to depart as he’s too good for the bench.

Before the final last week, the Brazil international left the door open for his exit during an interview with DAZN.

He was asked whether he wanted to remain at Madrid forever to which he replied: “Yes, well…”, before adding, “Everything can happen. I have a contract here, but I don’t know.”

After this interview, Premier League clubs were credited with an interest in Rodrygo, with Mundo Deportivo linking him with Liverpool. Meanwhile, Marca suggested Manchester City as a potential destination for the 23-year-old.

While it is thought Rodrygo would ideally want to remain in Madrid at Real, he could find himself forced out in order to become a star elsewhere as Madrid is clearly planning beyond him.

In this event, Ineos should be among the frontrunners to bring him to the Premier League.

Why Manchester United should be leading the queue for Rodrygo

Assuming Rodrygo is for sale this summer, reports earlier by Sport (21 March 2024, page 17) suggested a fee of £85m could be enough to tempt Madrid.

This is a substantial fee, however, would be for a substantial player who’d instantly improve the right wing at Old Trafford.

He’s a player who’d bring a winning mentality to United, while Rio Ferdinand thinks he’s “great”.

The right-wing also happens to be a position which United want to strengthen this summer, with Michael Olise being linked consistently to the club.

After a season in which he scored 17 and assisted nine goals, Rodrygo would be an excellent signing, and therefore the club must be front of the list of clubs interested.
