The Golden Age of Hollywood… the movies that will never be forgotten, the likes of which we’ll never see replicated. It took so many talented individuals to bring these unforgettable productions to the screen. Still, star power was just as valuable to the movies during this classical period of cinema as it is now. Some actresses simply had it, and Janis Paige… well, she had it. A beacon bright enough to light up any film or show she was in, she will be remembered not only as one of the last surviving icons of the golden age but as a screen presence powerful enough to make audiences smile for generations.

Hollywood legend Janis Paige has died at 101

Leaving behind a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and a legacy spanning both movies and TV, it was announced that actress Janis Paige passed away on Sunday, June 2nd 2024.

Reaching the old age of 101, her friend Stuart Lampert enlightened fans that she passed from natural causes in her Los Angeles residence.

In a career surpassing the six-decade mark, she will arguably be best remembered for such classic movies as the 1960 comedy Please Don’t Eat The Daisies alongside Doris Day and 1957’s Silk Stockings, which starred Fred Astaire. The pair even shared a dance sequence.

Along with movies such as Of Human Bondage and Winter Meeting, Janis will be immortalized just as well for her time on Broadway. Most notably, her star rose even more considerably with the role of Babe in the musical The Pajama Game, opening in 1954.

Preceding this, she had already signed with the movie studio Warner Bros., earning her parts in Bathing Beauty, Her Kind Of Man, and more.

Having already conquered the world of movies and theater, she later went on to star in her very own TV sitcom, It’s Always Jan. It ran between 1955 and 1956, following a widowed singer caring for her daughter.

Along with a later appearance in the popular US soap opera General Hospital and beyond, Janis proved herself across multiple mediums with ease. A true actress at heart.

Continuing to shine brightly into her 90s, she was vocal in her support of the Me Too movement in 2018, even sharing her own story and struggles with powerful Hollywood figures.

Tributes to Janis Paige paid by mourning stars and fans

In the wake of the upsetting announcement, fans have spared a moment to pay tribute to a Hollywood icon.

“RIP to the beautiful Janis Paige,” one tweeted. “She was in her first film 80 years ago, worked with Doris Day (who later took her Broadway role in The Pajama Game when it became a film), had her own ’50s sitcom, worked 1944-2001, and penned a #MeToo story at 95.”

Another replied: “And of course a memorable performance in Silk Stockings as well as many other films… what a star.”

Better Call Saul actor Michael McKean also shared a tribute along with a photo of them. “Thanks to the Tonys, I got the chance to tell her she was my first crush,” he admitted. “RIP to a great star.”

“Very sad to report that one of my top favorite actresses of all time died yesterday at the age of 101,” another wrote. “RIP Janis Paige, thanks for making every movie that you were in special, just by being there.”

Showering praise, one fan argued, “She stole the show in many of her films.” May she rest in peace.
