Sander Westerveld shares what Arne Slot was 'always' doing in Sparta Rotterdam training before Liverpool move

Arne Slot will arrive at Liverpool with plenty of pressure on his shoulders, not least because of the job his predecessor did.

Jurgen Klopp has left Anfield a hero, with the German enjoying a superb spell on Merseyside that produced a long list of major honours.

Slot will need time to settle into life at his new club, and while fans will allow him that time, the Dutchman will be keen to make a fast start.

On a positive note, he has already been backed by some key figures, with Trent Alexander-Arnold fully supporting his appointment.

The Reds right-back has now been joined by former Liverpool goalkeeper Sander Westerveld in backing the new man at Anfield.

And it turns out the new Reds manager was already closely attached to the Anfield club before he was appointed as their boss.

“The minute I heard Arne’s name [linked], I was like, ‘Yeah, that’s actually a perfect fit’,” Westerveld told LFCTV.

“Over the years people talk about Arne in Holland and they always compared him with Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp.

“He always showed Liverpool clips during training sessions and analysing games. He was showing Liverpool clips on how to play.

“He’s playing in a similar style. It’s been well-documented how he plays, what he wants in a team.”

Will Arne Slot be a success at Liverpool?

It remains to be seen exactly how Slot will manage on Merseyside, although he does arrive with plenty of experience on and off the pitch.

He captained Sparta Rotterdam when Westerveld joined the club in 2007, and moved into coaching with SC Cambuur after retiring in 2013.

Spells with AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord followed, with the latter winning the Eredivisie title and Dutch Cup under Slot.

His playing style and approach to the game should excite Liverpool supporters, who will be desperate for the club not to lose any of the hard work that Klopp carried out.

Former Premier League striker Darren Bent has, however, warned the new man in the dugout to not try and change everything at Anfield.
