‘Doesn’t even look at you’: French journalist admits it's so difficult to interview 153-race F1 driver

Formula 1 drivers may wish that the only thing they had to concentrate on during a race weekend is what’s happening on the track.

However, drivers are required to do a host of different media and sponsor requirements that can sometimes take hours.

The next race on the calendar is the Canadian Grand Prix which means one driver in particular could be in serious demand.

Lance Stroll used to share those duties with Nicholas Latifi, however, this year is the second season in a row where he’s the only home town driver to support.

However, speaking on IDREAU’s YouTube channel, French journalist Laurent Dupin is confident that the 25-year-old heading to his 154 Grand Prix isn’t going to be too happy about all the extra attention.

He’s recalled his previous experiences speaking to Stroll after qualifying or races and never found it easy to get a comprehensive answer out of the Canadian.

Lance Stroll one of Formula 1’s most difficult drivers to interview

It’s not been the easiest start to the season for Aston Martin and Lance Stroll.

After looking like they were on the right side of the split down the middle of the grid during the first few races, they’ve been caught up by the teams behind them rather than making progress catching the likes of Mercedes.

This has seen Stroll and his teammate Fernando Alonso only score four points in the last three races.

Both drivers finished outside of the top ten in Monaco, while Stroll could only finish 9 at Imola at the previous race weekend.

It was his more experienced teammate who struggled to find the right words to say after the race in Monte Carlo.

Stroll has previously had issues with his team at Aston Martin, although his father’s position within the team means he’s almost invulnerable to being dropped at the end of the season.

That doesn’t necessarily mean he has to be happy to address the press no matter what result he produces on the track.

Laurent Dupin shares his experience with Lance Stroll

Asked about interviewing Stroll, Laurent Dupin said: “No, Lance Stroll I sometimes say to myself, it’s good that I don’t do it [interview him] anymore.

“In fact, if the result is good and he scores points, he’ll say, ‘Yeah, yeah,’ while scratching himself like that, he doesn’t even look at you.

“He’ll say, ‘Yeah, it’s not bad,’ or if he’s eliminated from Q1 where it’s not going well at all it’s, ‘We don’t know the car’.

“I don’t think there’s ever a response that lasts more than 10 seconds.”

Asked if he’s also like that outside of interviews, Dupin added: “In the paddock, he is very good friends with Esteban Ocon.

“It’s the only time we see him laughing in a weekend, it’s when he chats with Esteban before the parade.

“The rest of the time, he is not very dynamic and he borders on having no enthusiasm when he goes to speak to the sponsors.”

Lance Stroll’s F1 future still theoretically up in the air

Although Stroll isn’t the biggest fan of his media duties, he will eventually have to address the press once his Aston Martin future is decided.

He’s currently on a rolling contract with the team and there are no suggestions that his father is going to drop him any time soon.

That hasn’t stopped other drivers on the grid being linked with a move to the team.

Carlos Sainz has been suggested as a potential teammate for Alonso next season with his Ferrari deal set to expire.

Aston Martin will be partnering with Honda from 2026 and their connections with the in-form Yuki Tsunoda have been discussed.

However, Lance Stroll has a change of heart, it’s hard to see him not being on the grid for the foreseeable future.
