Irish national media rave about what Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher did against Hungary

Liverpool fans have a whole raft of their players to keep an eye on during the summer internationals.

Plenty of Reds are travelling to Germany for the European Championships or to the USA for Copa America. There’s a lot to keep on top of.

Things kicked off well on Monday, with Trent Alexander-Arnold impressing for England. Coming into Tuesday, another Liverpool player was on the scoresheet; Diogo Jota happily returning to fitness and slotting home a penalty for Portugal.

Things didn’t go quite so well for Dominik Szoboszlai, though. Szoboszlai was blasted by his manager having turned in a ‘mediocre’ performance for Hungary.

Ironically, that was good news for Szoboszlai’s Liverpool teammate Caoimhin Kelleher. The pair matched up against each other at Ireland’s Aviva Stadium, and it was the goalkeeper who came out on top.

Caoimhin Kelleher praised for ‘superb’ display

Kelleher has been in the news a fair bit recently. After playing 26 times for Liverpool this season, Kelleher has hinted at a desire to move on.

Quite where he may end up remains to be seen. However, a move to Celtic is reportedly seen as a possibility.

Liverpool are said to be holding out for a £20m fee for Kelleher. And although Celtic are claimed to have rebuked at the asking price, the 25-year-old keeps on proving that he’s worth it.

The latest demonstration of this came on Wednesday against Szoboszlai and Hungary.

Kelleher was given the nod by interim Ireland manager John O’Shea and by the sounds of things, the Liverpool academy graduate did not disappoint.

According to the Irish Independent, Kelleher ‘shone’ as Ireland picked up an impressive looking win.

Handing the goalkeeper a seven out of 10 rating, the Independent claim that Kelleher made two ‘superb’ saves in quick succession during the second-half. Only man of the match Will Smallbone could match Kelleher’s rating.

Will Caoimhin Kelleher leave Liverpool?

It really feels like Kelleher is starting to come into his own as a goalkeeper. Having steadily cemented his place in the Liverpool squad, the Irishman is coming to the fore.

In some ways, this will be bittersweet for Reds fans. It’s obviously wonderful seeing a player who came through the academy go on to do good things.

It isn’t often that a goalkeeper comes through, so that makes it even more special. There is no harder position to establish yourself in.

However, Kelleher’s success does also mean that he’ll want more football. At 25, it doesn’t feel as though Liverpool will stand in his way.

Celtic may be stalling, but Wolves are reportedly ready to offer Kelleher a move in the Premier League.

One way or another, if he keeps these displays up, we can’t see the goalie staying at Liverpool too much longer.
