Report: Former Sheffield Wednesday ace could join Europa League club after rejecting new deal in 2023

A former Sheffield Wednesday player is now in line for a £5 million move to a Serie A club.

Sheffield Wednesday have parted ways with a number of players in recent years, as they have won promotion and suffered relegation in two of the last four seasons.

The Owls have already released 16 players since 2022, but could already regret allowing one to leave.

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru joined Wednesday from Manchester City in 2020, with the start of his spell at Hillsborough being stop-start due to injury.

He went onto score six times and provided five assists in 86 matches for Wednesday, before he was released last summer.

It wasn’t really up to the club though, with the midfielder opting to reject a new contract in search of a new adventure.

Dele-Bashiru went onto join Turkish side Hatayspor, where he netted nine goals and provided three assists in 36 matches, helping the club to avoid relegation by one point.

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru wanted by Lazio

His spectacular form has since earned him a call-up to the Nigeria national team, while he could now make a huge leap to the Europa League.

According to journalistAlfredo Pedulla, Lazio have enquired about Dele-Bashiru’s availability and are now set to hold talks with Hatayspor over a potential deal.

It is believed that the 23-year-old is valued at around £5 million plus bonuses – only a year after he left Hillsborough for free.

Lazio finished seventh in Serie A last season, qualifying for the Europa League group stage after taking second place in the 2022-23 campaign.

The Nigerian could have thrived under Danny Rohl

Given that Dele-Bashiru was only 22 years old when he left Wednesday and had just played his first full season in senior football, it is a real shame that he chose to leave the club.

He had struggled to establish himself as a regular at the club, but could well have proven to be a really good player under Danny Rohl.

The Owls have struggled for goals this term and he could have made a real impact, especially when Josh Windass was out injured.

The Yorkshire outfit won’t look back with regret though, and will instead hope to bring in a player that can add goals to their game for less than £5m.
