Emerging footage shows Sheffield Wednesday transfer target back in training after injury scare

Sheffield Wednesday striker target Duncan McGuire appears to have returned to training following injury concerns.

McGuire should theoretically no longer be a target for Sheffield Wednesday after being beaten to the signing by Championship rivals Blackburn Rovers on the winter transfer window deadline day.

However, despite the American flying to the UK to complete the signing before the deadline, the deal spectacularly fell through owing to an administrative error from Rovers.

In a club statement, Rovers confirmed that the completed paperwork was not submitted before the deadline and that the EFL board had rejected the club’s appeal to register the player.

The forward returned to America with current club MLS club Orlando City ahead of the 2024 season.

According to journalist Alan Nixon, Wednesday have reignited their interest in McGuire following the collapse but will face competition from Rovers who have confirmed they are working on a fresh deal for the 23-year-old.

Sheffield Wednesday target Duncan McGuire in Orlando training

McGuire has enjoyed a good start to the 2024 MLS season with five goals in 12 games for his club, currently in 11 place in the Eastern Conference.

However, the American was recently forced off in the 16 minute of a match against San Jose Earthquakes owing to a shoulder injury.

The injury ruled the forward out for his club’s following two matches against Columbus Crew and Chicago Fire, where they struggled without him, picking up just one point from the two fixtures.

However, McGuire’s return to first-team action could be imminent as Florida-based journalist Alonso Contreras posted a video on X showing the player taking part in an Orlando training session.

The video shows the forward taking part in an offensive drill when he can be seen slotting the ball past the goalkeeper and teeing up teammates to do the same under no defensive pressure.

Imminent return of Duncan McGuire is boost for Sheffield Wednesday

The Owls should be in the hunt to sign a striker this summer with Bailey Cadamarteri and Michael Smith the only recognized centre-forwards in the squad after Lee Gregory, Ashley Fletcher, and the excellent Ike Ugbo have now departed Hillsborough.

It appears that McGuire is one of three centre-forward targets alongside Ugbo and Arsenal’s Mika Biereth.

McGuire’s fitness will be a key factor in keeping him as a target for Danny Rohl’s side this summer, and if he can make a swift return to action with Orlando City then the Owls may quickly push on with their interest in the attacker.
