Former Derby County ace axed by Phillip Cocu still tops Championship goal contributions list since 2013/14

A player Derby County released in 2020 tops the Championship goal contributions list across the last decade.

Derby County have had some incredibly talented players wear the famous black and white jersey in their recent history.

In their era of battling for promotion out of the Championship, the Rams were able to attract some of the best players to grace the second tier.

There are several names that spring to mind for the joy they brought to Derby supporters, including Matej Vydra for his 21-goal campaign in the 2017/18 campaign and Harry Wilson for his phenomenal 2018/19 season.

But there is one player who sticks out like a sore thumb when looking at their most prolific scorers across the past decade, and that is Chris Martin.

The 17-cap Scotland international plundered 76 goals in 224 appearances for the Rams and remarkably, holds a record in the Championship that still stands today.

Chris Martin has the most Championship goal contributions since 2013/14

Martin top-scored for Derby across three consecutive campaigns, reaching double figures for goals in 2013/14, 2014/15 and 2015/16.

The prolific striker wasn’t just an incredible finisher of chances, he was also a chief creator of them, ending his career at Pride Park with 38 assists.

Although he supplied most of his goals at Derby, Martin played for various other clubs in the second tier, including Crystal Palace, Norwich City, Hull, Fulham, Reading and Bristol City.

And since the 2013/14 season, excluding the play-offs, the current Bristol Rovers striker has been involved in more Championship goals than any other player (97 goals, 42 assists), as per Opta Joe.

Remarkably, 98 of those contributions came during his time at Derby as Martin enjoyed the best scoring period of his career with the Rams.

Where does Chris Martin rank in Derby’s list of all-time scorers?

Martin was released from Derby by then-manager Philipp Cocu in 2020, with the 35-year-old joining Championship rivals Bristol City.

It wasn’t a fitting end to his Rams career as the former Scotland international places second in their list of all-time scorers, with only Kevin Hector beating his tally of 76 goals.

Compared to most other clubs in England, Derby’s list of top scorers isn’t that impressive as a total of 48 is enough to get into the top five.

Still, that doesn’t take anything away from Martin’s achievements, who is currently banging in goals for Bristol Rovers, ending the 2023/24 campaign with 16 in League One.
