Report: Liverpool have been turned down by £15m player who Gigi Buffon called 'sensational'

Liverpool are on the lookout for an addition to their goalkeeping department this summer.

The Reds have one of – if not the – best goalies in the world in Alisson Becker, but the Brazilian could do with a new deputy.

After Caoimhin Kelleher announced his intention to leave Liverpool, he looks set to be playing for a new team next season.

As a result, Arne Slot must find the right alternative. There’s is not yet a guarantee that the No.2 will go of course, but with Wolves reportedly lining up a bid for Kelleher, it seems like a probable outcome.

Where to go from the Irishman is a debate Liverpool will have to weigh up. But it seems that they can already cross one name off their shortlist.

Michele Di Gregorio says no to Liverpool

There have been claims in the media that Liverpool have already been speaking to potential new ‘keepers.

As they look to get Slot’s Liverpool squad sorted in the early weeks of the window, the Reds are trying to move quickly.

As part of that offensive, Italian outlet Calciomercato.it claim that Liverpool attempted to sign Monza goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio.

Di Gregorio has had a really good season with Monza, winning the award for best goalkeeper in Italy’s Serie A.

This reportedly drew attention from Liverpool, who are said to have ‘shown up’ while the 26-year-old negotiated a deal with Juventus.

However, Di Gregorio reportedly could not be swayed to move to Anfield. The Italian is said to have simply ‘rejected’ the Reds, with Newcastle also receiving the same treatement.

Instead, Di Gregorio is claimed to be ‘one step away’ from joining Juventus, with an agreement of around £15m struck with Monza.

Gigi Buffon hails ‘sensational’ Di Gregorio

Di Gregorio has recovered from being cast aside by the Inter academy to become one of the best goalkeepers in Italy.

Having initially joined Monza on loan in 2020, the ‘keeper helped them to win promotion in 2022 and has been excelling in the top division ever since.

Di Gregorio’s development has even earned him praise from perhaps the greatest Italian goalkeeper of all time.

In quotes published on Tuesday from TuttomercatoWeb, Gigi Buffon hailed what he’d seen from the man who rejected Liverpool.

“I think he’s had two amazing seasons confirming himself as one of the best goalkeepers ever,” the World Cup winner is quoted as saying. “If Juve took him, it means he’s from Juve.”

Unfortunately for Liverpool, they won’t get a chance to see.
