Liverpool chose not to sign £25m wonderkid after meeting with him, want ‘outstanding’ forward instead

Liverpool are looking into potential attacking options in the summer transfer window.

The Reds are seemingly interested in adding to the options at Arne Slot’s disposal over the course of the next few months.

Although Liverpool have a number of high quality players in forward areas, the suggestion has been that they are planning to add one more.

Who this could be still remains a mystery. However, there have been rumours naming a number of different players. Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo is one who looks like a typical Michael Edwards signing.

As we know, these things tend to happen away from the spotlight where Liverpool are concerned, though. And as it turns out, the Reds have been having private meetings to work out who will be added to their squad.

Liverpool took Luis Guilherme meeting

As well as targeting a new forward, it has been reported that Liverpool are looking at signing young talents from South America and specifically Brazil.

Luckily, there are a handful of players out there who could satisfy both of these remits.

One of those is Palmeiras talent Luis Guilherme. Having broken into the Palmeiras squad last season, Guilherme has reportedly caught Liverpool’s eye.

However, despite Guilherme shining for his team again this term, the Reds look set to let him move elsewhere. According to BBC Sport, West Ham are set to sign the 18-year-old for £25m.

This news may have been met by frustration from Liverpool supporters keen to see Guilherme at Anfield.

But according to 90min, it was actually the Reds decision not to plough ahead and sign the Brazil U20 international.

They claim that Liverpool had meetings with Guilherme as far back as November having been monitoring his progress.

Nothing is said to have progressed further though, with Liverpool reportedly prioritising targets such as Leeds United’s Crysencio Summerville instead.

Liverpool looking at Crysencio Summerville

In terms of sure things, neither Guilherme nor Summerville would be one for Liverpool.

Guilherme looks like a supreme talent and it is a shame to miss out on him. But at the same time it’s a big leap from Brazil to the Premier League, let alone to a club the size of Liverpool. It would have been a gamble.

Between the two players, you’d have to say that Summerville is a safer bet. However, coming from the Championship to Liverpool is also an enormous step. There’s little guarantee of success.

Liverpool have clearly seen something in the 22-year-old, though. His manager at Leeds, Daniel Farke, labelled Summerville’s performances as being ‘outstanding’ this season [The Leeds Press].

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, this has led to Liverpool pushing to sign Summerville.

It remains to be seen whether that goes any further. But let’s hope that the Reds don’t come to regret walking away from Guilherme.
